This is one of my all-time favorites. Sam Peckinpah is one of the greatest new thinking directors. The calm frame combat scenes in this movie are shapely and there is quite a bit of additional footage. The quality of the transfer to DVD is superior. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a enormous war film, especially Foul of Iron.

“Kings Row” is the most eminent film of Ronald Reagan’s actor career, for which he drew his best reviews. However, by the time it was released in 1942, Reagan was in the Army and his film career had received a fateful interruption that would eventually lead to his shifting to a political career. I remember that when Breshnev was preparing to meet with President Reagan the Soviet leader screened several of Reagan’s films, and “King’s Row” was the one that impressed him. If you have already seen this film, directed by Sam Wood, you know why.

The film focuses on five childhood friends who grow up to complicated lives. Parris Mitchell (Robert Cummings) has become a medical student, studying privately with Dr. Alexander Tower (Claude Rains), whose daughter Cassandra (Betty Field) is a sheltered neurotic. Louise Gordon (Nancy Coleman) has been raised by harsh parents who warn here away from playboy Drake McHugh (Reagan), who is living off an inheritance. Drake ends up falling for Randy Monoghan (Ann Sheridan), the weak tomboy who has grown up in to a most practical working class girl. Things then obtain very gloomy. First, when Dr. Tower discovers Cassandra is pregnant he kills her and himself. Then, after losing his fortune and taking a job at the railroad yard, Drake is injured and Dr. Gordon (Charles Coburn) decides to amputate the young man’s legs as a punishment for his traditional hedonism. This is what leads to Reagan’s unforgettable scene when he wakes up and discovers what has been done to him. The scene could have become ludicrous, but Reagan pulls it off and it is clearly his finest moment as an actor.

“Kings Row” is based on the unique by Henry Bellamann, which is a massive memoir of sadism and thwarted worship in what was clearly the “Payton Status” of its day, status in a detached Midwestern town at the turn of the (last) century. A lot of the novel’s elements, such as incest, homosexuality and euthanasia were never going to fabricate it into the film forcing screenwriter Casey Robinson to regain what he could (e.g., turning the incest between Dr. Tower and his daughter Cassandra into a put a question to of insanity) . Robinson also gave the movie a “happier” ending (originally, Drake McHugh dies of cancer after his legs are unnecessarily amputated) . Even more radical was the casting, since few in Hollywood were comfortable with Sheridan, Cummings and Reagan having the three lead roles. However, all of them make admirably, as does Field and the supporting cast of mature character actors.

Reagan would go on to entitle his autobiography “Where’s the Rest of Me? ” after the noted line he screams when he awakens to stare his legs are gone. He often told the narrative about what it was like to film the scene, his shy preparation for him to win the moment in him as an actor and director Wood waiting for Reagan to give the go ahead. For his parent, Reagan always credited Ann Sheridan, who was not supposed to be in the scene. But when he suddenly started calling for Randy she rushed into the room in character and Reagan delivered a grand scene.

This is a riveting soap opera with a cast that holds all the pieces together, and keeps the sometimes fabulous state absorbing at all times for the viewer.

It was filmed on a soundstage, with very effective scenic accomplish by William Cameron Menzies…I unprejudiced admire the skies!

Brilliantly conceived and directed by Sam Wood, it’s based on Harry Bellamann’s best-selling current. The salubrious Erich Wolfgang Korngold obtain also adds to the drama and atmosphere.

Set in a turn of the century miniature town, where the shadowy secrets and vile motives of some difference with the goodness of others, the best scenes are between Ann Sheridan and Ronald Reagan.

The chemistry between them is a delight, and their acting so proper, one feels one is sharing the moment with them, even though this was filmed over 60 years ago. They shine as Randy and Drake, two strong, independent, and fun loving souls.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Kings Row! Click Here

With the exception of one or two scenes with rather stilted dialogue between Betty Field and Robert Cummings, the pacing never lags. There are tall actors even in the supporting roles, like Dame Judith Anderson and Maria Ouspenskaya. Claude Rains is absolutely beneficial, and steals every scene he’s in.

This classic was nominated for several Oscars…B&W Cinematography (James Wong Howe), Director, and Best Narrate, but lost to a “Mrs. Minever” sweep.

It’s perhaps Ronald Reagan’s best performance, so this film is a fragment of American history, as well as being highly piquant.

If director Monte Hellman’s THE SHOOTING is not the cult movie by excellence, I’m ready to peruse the whole production of Jackie Chan available here at … . DVD’s and VHS. Without swiftly forwarding.

Shot entirely in the magnificent Utah desert sceneries, THE SHOOTING relates the memoir of a hunting. Who is hunted and who is hunting is one of the multiple unanswered questions of this recent western. The name of the character played by Millie Perkins is never uttered, she is only credited as “The Woman”. Is she the mother of the child Warren Oates’s brother would have hurted during a plod into town? Fair guess.

Monte Hellman and Jack Nicholson were both share of producer Roger Corman’s improbable nest of future stars, they teamed up in 1967 for THE SHOOTING and Stir IN A WHIRLWIND shot simultaneously. All I can say is that THE SHOOTING is a kind of UFO in the american production of this period and deserves to cease in your collection as an example of what can be done with a restricted budget and a lot of genuine ideas. Simply fantastic.

I had a few problems with the menus of the DVD, never incandescent where I was because the different available features were not lightened. But fortunately I know how to count until ten and made my draw through the menus where I discovered filmographies, a relate gallery, different trailers and a very informative commentary said by Monte Hellman and Millie THE WOMAN Perkins. I eventually learned that Jack Nicholson was helped by a technical trick when he had to diagram his gun. Simple but efficient.

A DVD for your library.

THE SHOOTING (1966) : Willet Gashade (Warren Oates) and his dimwitted friend Coley (Will Hutchins) are in a place of growing paranoia after their partner is inexplicably shot to death by an unseen assassin at their petite mining camp. The slay may have been in retaliation for the accidental trampling death of “a diminutive person” in town, ostensibly by Gashade’s brother, who had left camp in a tall race immediately prior to the shooting. The next morning, while the two remain confused and suspicious over this disturbing mystery, a uncommon young woman (Millie Perkins) shoots her horse to death outside of the camp and then offers Gashade a thousand dollars to lead her to a plot called Kingsley. He accepts even though he makes no attempt to shroud his distrust. Intrigued by The Woman, Coley offers to notice along. On their race, the trio are tracked at a distance by a gloomy clad stranger, Billy Spear (Jack Nicholson) . Meanwhile, The Woman laughingly toys with Coley’s emotions and refuses to respond any of Gashade’s questions. Spear eventually joins them and proves to be a most imperfect companion. Hostile and abusive in the grievous, Spear is a gunslinger cohort of The Woman, who is herself snappily revealed to be every bit as unpleasant as Gashade had suspected from the beginning. Eventually, the unique scoot ends in bloody disarray at the foot of a rock-strewn mountain, where Gashade comes face to face with the reply to the mystery, at spacious cost.

One of the most famed of all cult movies, and deservedly so, THE SHOOTING is a truly titanic example of the once considerable western manufacture, a triumphant dying gasp for the genre. This compelling yarn of outlandish vengeance is directed with cold frosty brilliance by Monte Hellman. The perennially underrated Hellman works wonders on a lowbudget, with magnificent cinematography (by Gregory Sandor) provoking a strong aura of the mysterious and uncanny even in the most realistically detailed scenes.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Shooting! Click Here

A dinky but terrific cast helps brings the occasionally mystical account to life. Warren Oates plays the world weary and wise Grashade with his usual gritty style, making him a trustworthy anti-hero for this unlit sage. He’s an profitable foe to Jack Nicholson’s irredeemably cross Billy Spear, one of the most repulsively mean of all movie villains. As terrible as he is, Nicholson is ultimately simply a well armed servant at the beck and call of The Woman, who is beautifully played by Millie Perkins for maximum hissability. Both Spear and The Woman engineer the destruction of Oates’ foolish sidekick Coley, whose decency earns him an undeserved fate; Will Hutchins’ charmingly sweet performance provides the film with its only moments of gentleness.

Richly ambiguous and by turns realistic and dreamlike, THE SHOOTING is a sporadically baffling but undeniably heady dart into the desert. The creepy ending makes this one of those rare movies that will compel you to immediately rewatch the whole thing from beginning to ruin, if only so you can try to satisfy your curiosity about what it unprejudiced might REALLY be all about. Its THAT ample of a movie.

The VCI DVD presents THE SHOOTING in a radiant, modestly letterboxed transfer that captures the film in all its eerie widescreen glory. Since the film never received a theatrical release and has been shown only rarely on television, this is the first time most people will have ever had the chance to peek this film in its intended aspect ratio. The only extra is a terrific and highly informative audio commentary from Hellman and Perkins, who vividly select with candor and humor the filming of this ultra-cheap, high-class production.

I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Logan’s Accelerate fan, if such a thing exists, and was ecstatic to leer the film released to DVD. The transfer looks immense, and the letterboxed format preserves the pleasing cinematography. The acting is, by and grand, radiant beneficial. Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Richard Jordan are all in attractive acquire. Peter Ustinov chews scenery in his portions of the film, but isn’t that what you build him in a movie for? The visual effects won an Oscar benefit in ’76, pre-Star Wars. I would space their quality somewhere above Marooned, but below 2001:a Area Oddyssey. The Aerial understanding of the city that opens the film looks really cheesy, but the Carrousel sequence is downright eerie. It is even more much when you learn that the whole sequence was done in-camera, on-set with no compositing aside from the white beam of light that emanates from the ceiling. The compositing and matte paintings are breathtaking. The film takes a lot of flak for its costumes and for looking like it was shot in a shopping mall. I reflect the costumes are moot–who know what we’ll be wearing in the future? These people live in a hedonistic, weather-free society. It stands to reason that they would be very revealing and purely cosmetic for those very reasons. As far as the examine of the sets goes–this is a materialistic, consumer-mad, hermetically sealed society that the film portrays–of course its going to perceive like a shopping mall. The film is not exactly an just representsation of the events in the book (something I wouldn’t mind seeing someday) . Budgetary, time and technological constraints would made doing so impossible at the time. Quiet, it holds up well on its acquire merits. One last note: Am I the only one who finds the appreciate account angle of this movie touching? It’s engrossing to watch two people experiencing fancy for the first time, especially in the world portrayed in Logan’s Bustle, where people don’t have lasting emotional ties to one another. What the appreciate myth kind of implies is that this is the first time in hundreds of years that people have idea and felt in terms of strong emotions for each other. In an era like our occupy where the word is bandied about so powerful as to be meaningless, it’s refreshing to peep a future where its meaning is rediscovered.

Logan’s Rush started off with a splendid wonderful concept–(courtesy of science fiction writers William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson) what if our youth obsessed society set everyone over the age of 30 (21 in the new) to death as a means of population control? This film version of a classic cautionary narrative is intermittantly successful. David Zelag Goodman’s screenplay condenses and changes around several key characters. Goodman’s script essentially refocuses the modern into The Fugitive in the future. In the current recent Francis (played brilliantly by the slow Richard Jordan) and the Ancient Man character (played as befuddled by Peter Ustinov) were one and the same. You’ll need to read the modern to seek why this was an primary altered dwelling point.

Additionally, Sanctuary did exist in the original while here it’s positive that it’s something of an urban account. While these spot points might not seem important, altering them radically reshaped the film. Quiet, it’s certain that the film’s director, producer and screenwriter (respectively, Michael Anderson the unhurried Saul David and Goodman) wanted to streamline what could have been a confusing spot if not layed out correctly.

The basic plot–In the future our society is enclosed in domes. As a means to control the population, everyone has a life clock crystal on their hand. When you arrive 30 you have the option to become “renewed” in a ceremony attended by the citizens. Logan (Michael York) and Francis (Richard Jordan) are Sandmen who hunt, capture/or demolish runners (people who determine to not go through renewal and try to rush) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Logan’s Run! Click Here

After one incident, Logan is debriefed by the computer that runs the city. The runner wore a symbol representing life. During this debriefing he is send undercover to become a “runner” and fetch out 1) Who is slow the network that tries to procure people out of the city and 2) If sanctuary exists. Logan’s life clock is prematurely old to 30. He contacts a girl who he had met before on the circuit (a system where people can “dial up” others for casual sex) who he had seen wearing the same symbol. Despite her better judgement, she elects to relieve him flee.

Francis, apprehensive that his friend is running, elects to spin him and either bring him befriend for renewal or extinguish him.

The film is quite obliging despite some gaping space holes. Michael York gives a impassioned performance as Logan 5. Jenny Agutter is intelligent as Jessica. Richard Jordan shines as Logan’s musty partner Francis who feels betrayed and hunts Logan down. Roscoe Lee Brown is exceptional in his cameo as the demented cyborg Box. Michael Anderson, Jnr. gives a nice cameo performance as the surgeon hired to alter Logan’s appearence. Made for $6 million, Logan’s Hurry looked quite qualified when it was released in 1976. The symbolism of having Francis and Logan fight in the House of Representatives with an American flag was quite evident given the year of release (1976) .

In many respects the themes in the film are more timely than ever. The obsession with youth, looking expedient and plastic surgery have reach to account for our culture in the 21st Century. The only thing missing from the film are botox injections.

Jerry Goldsmith’s vivid regain is a highlight of the film. Like his catch for Planet of the Apes, Goldsmith chose to go with a mix of sythesizers and orchestra to picture the city of the future. He eschews cliches in his music and the various themes and cues are at turns suspenseful and witty. The optical effects are magnificent ample given the time. The matte paintings by Albert Whitlock are outstanding and fairly convincing. The miniatures are a mixed bag. They didn’t examine completely convincing in 1976 nor do they today. Piece of the pickle has to do with the fact that waters don’t fare well when placed in miniatures. You can’t miniaturize the bubbles and water drops. Also, the expend of the miniatures in combination with live action is quite grainy due to the film stock and amount of composites. Calm, if you can suspend your disbelief, you’ll luxuriate in the film despite its limitations.

Logan’s Speed attempted to announce an adult cautionary story in a world of light weight escapist movies. It’s a commendable film and the film makers frequently bite off more than they can chew. I’d rather have a film that’s too ambitious than not at all.

Still, I indulge in the ambitions if not the execution. It’s nice to finally have this stunning if flawed movie on DVD. The transfer is quite fine although the print has a number of flaws. There’s also quite a bit of dirt evident on the print. These probably could have been cleared up with a shriek digital transfer. Additionally, the 5.1 soundtrack occasionally sounds “tinny” and when played in the stereo format can be quite difficult to hear.

The extras are dinky but nice. The commentary by director Michael Anderson and Michael York is quite beneficial and informative. A pity the terrific actor Richard Jordan isn’t around any longer to give us his perspective. I would have liked to witness a modern retrospective documentary on the making of the film. It’s not likely to happen, though as no one is going to champion this film at the expensive of other newer projects (particulary since producer Saul David is gone) . The featurette included is the fresh one made to promote the film. It’s actually glowing decent given the age and purpose of it. The trailer is included as well. The disc is a dual sided single layer DVD with the widescreen and pan & scan versions on the same disc.

This area collects the first 13 episodes of The Batman, the newest incarnation of the Shaded Knight. Warner Home Video has finally wised up, ditched the meager single discs and given fans and collectors an affordable scheme to win this series on dvd.

But wait…are there any fans and collectors? The general bat-fan will impart you this display sucks, while the runt but vocal die-hards will pump The Batman for all its worth. This is a very difficult expose to rate. Not only does it feel like Batman as envisioned by corporate focus groups, but the general writing is blueprint below par compared to the classic Batman: Captivating series.

In my conception, these problems are mostly confined to the first season. This is definitely the present at its worst, and the newer seasons have been powerful more kinetic and moving. It’s painful here to study Bruce eat nachos and cast opera aside for bubblegum pop. It’s painful to look him resort to an endless array of bat-gadgets to select down foes. But the explain has occasional moments of brilliance. When Batman slips into a coma after being thrashed by Bane, there’s a very poignant spy at the night of his parents’ assassinate. The villain designs, wacky and grotesque as they may be, are fiercely unique and fun if you go in with the factual expectations. And the season finale, written by Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman, brings the exhibit to a near-BTAS level with a effect original interpretation of Clayface. It’s really worth checking out.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Batman – The Complete First Season! Click Here

Again, this is a difficult recommendation. Season 1 is mostly stale, and I can’t blame anyone for shunning it. However, the second season onwards is definitely worth looking into. I at least give kudos to WB for giving us The Batman in a season state that has more appeal to adult collectors. For those on the fence, check out season 2 when/if it is eventually released, then go serve and gawk if you’d like season 1 for completion purposes. In the meanwhile, rent for the Clayface finale.

Let’s initiate with what I do like. The style of the cartoon is actually magnificent kindly. At first I was a tiny turned off by the whole “X-treme” Batman, but considering this is Bruce Wayne in his younger days I deem it works.

However, the characters are reduced to nothing. Batman has absolutely no edge to him. In the novel series we got to know his past and saw him really struggle with the death of his parents, and lets be fair, the best thing about Batman is that he’s the first superhero who’s given a accurate motive. In this series the death of his parents are brough up a few times, but as a driving force it’s generally ignored.

The villians are all one-note characters. In the modern series each villian had some kind of conflict. It wasn’t impartial edifying versus evil; it was about that in-between grey. The Man-Bat is unprejudiced some exasperated scientist. Mr. Freeze is fair some jewel thief. They’re race of the mill pedestrian characters. The only exception is Clay Face. Lets hope this original version of Clay Face is pointing to a unique direction to the series. Maybe the writers will wise up and give us some excellent stories. Until then I’ll be watching the DVDs of the new Batman: The Attractive Series.

Note: my comments are based on Japanese release of this movie, but Geneon/Pioneer did a pleasing job with the first movie so the U.S. release of this sequal should be noble as well.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Onmyoji II! Click Here

I liked this movie even better than the first. The photography, costume and effects seem a bit more polished and the actors seemed to have relaxed more into their roles.

As for the fable itself: Our legendary hero, Abe no Seimei, and companion, Hiromasa, become involed in the record of the power struggle between the Yamato line and the Izumo line, for control of the government, and the legends of Susano-o-no-Mikoto, his sister Amaterasu Omikami and the Ame-no-murakumo-no-tsurugi (the eminent sword that was later called The Kusinagi or “grass cutter” sword that is now portion of the imperial regalia) . Those with an interest in the Heian history, costume and legends should really delight in this film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Onmyoji II! Click Here

The extras also include an engaging segment visiting historical sites around Izumo and Heian Kyo (Kyoto) that were extinct as the basis for the sets or staunch film locations.

Every once in a while, I rep surprised by a film. And Japanese period occult films are no exception. The unique Onmyogi, was a savory fragment of fantasy, pitting Abe No Seimei (Mansai Nomura) and his fresh friend Hiromasa (Hideaki Ito) against a obedient villain in what is essentially a power struggle for the future of Heian Japan. It was shiny in its contrivance, but also indulged in a lot of high camp in its effects. In other words, a classy anxiety film, but not a dramatic tour de force.

Onmyogi two stars the same two leads, but the account is and order of magnitude stronger than it’s predecessor. This time Heian Kyo is threatened by a demonic series of killings and the emperor turns to Seimei for benefit. The wizard finds himself enmeshed in the killings and the mystery of Himiko (Kyoko Fukada), a young princess given to tomboyish antics and sleepwalking. Hiromasa, in the meantime, encounters a young musician (Susa) who remembers tunes from the forgotten village of Izumo.

Naturally all these threads reach together, Hiromasa falls in care for, Seimei finds his opponent is the human thread that ties Himiko and Susa together – Genkaku (Kiichi Nakai), the head of Izumo village. Genkaku has been driven angry after seeing the expose regimes troops extinguish his village. He schemes to end the Yamato capital and recreate the kingdom as a Izumo holding. He intyends to reincarnate the god Susa-No-O in his son’s body, even though this means the destruction of Susa and Himeko.

Thus the film turns not on the scare (and there is plenty), but on the painful workings of fate that pit brother against sister. No one in this film is really infamous, but each marches to interior motivations in a tragic landscape.

As before, the cinematography is valid. The film is a classic period share, complete with detailed costumes, right settings, and a honorable watch for Heian society. Worthy of what you explore is based on precise myth and history, suitable down to the sword that plays an valuable section in the buildup to the climax. All of the actors are at their best, but Mansai Nomura deserves extra honors for his dancework, which is mostly improvisation, but looks and feels as if it were native to the times.

If you were to only discover one of these films I would suggest you notice for this one. But it would be a sin to miss either. It’s not often you derive a apprehension film, a gothic romance, and a vision of what courtly life was in medieval Japan all wrapped up in one film. Recommended.

THE GATHERING STORM is a compelling gape at the lion in wilderness. The lion, of course, is Winston Churchill (Albert Finney) and the wilderness is the political exclusion he endured circa 1938-39. It was during those years that Germany rearmed at an alarming rate; England slept while Adolf Hitler plotted. It was also a time that found Churchill gadflying from opposition to Indian independence to futilely warning England, and the world, about the newly unsafe Nazi Germany.

Such is the political context TGS takes position in, but the movie devotes most of its 90-some minutes to domestic life at Chartwell, Churchill’s country estate and the dwelling he amassed and assessed the intelligence on Germany fed to him by a variety of sources, most notably Foreign Office official Ralph Wigram (Linus Roache) . Vanessa Redgrave plays Churchill’s wife Clemmie, a woman who was as worthy a match for her renowned husband as Redgrave is a match for the good Finney.

THE GATHERING STORM won’t vow you all that great about English politics on the eve of World War II, or even that great about Churchill the politician. As a character gape of a complex politician it’s simply shining, and strongly recommended.

When I first heard that Albert Finney would play Sir Winston Churchill in “The Gathering Storm” I was disappointed and wondered how he could pull it off. Quiet I watched the movie and the first appearance of Mr. Finney on camouflage as the outmoded and legendary British hero do all of my fears to rest. Winston was alive again. The same can be said for the performance of Vanessa Redgrave as Clementine Churchill.

The movie is filled with facts about Churchill’s activities leading up to war with Germany, his intelligence activities and his relationship with his wife and family. The film is a must have for all Churchillophiles.

But Henson also produced some very memorable, titillating fantasy films, and after his death his production company has continued that tradition. “The Jim Henson Family Film Collection” brings together three classic films from Henson and his company, as well as an accompanying book of unknown roar.

“Labyrinth” becomes a dilemma for teenage Sarah, who is stuck babysitting her crying baby stepbrother. But when she idly wished that the goblins would seize him, she never expected it to happen — or that the Goblin King Jareth (David Bowie) would challenge her if she tries to fetch her brother aid.

Now Sarah has only thirteen hours to navigate a changing, risky maze, with Jareth’s castle at the center of it. To salvage her map, she will have to succor unique creatures and avoid lethal bogs, horrible fairies, head-jugglers, and finally Jareth himself — or her brother will be turned into a goblin himself.

“The Unlit Crystal” is the heart of this movie, where on another world, there are two exclusive races — the spacious, gentle, calm Mystics, and the execrable, vulture-like, vicious Skekses. They are somehow connected to a massive crystal that was broken long ago, and now a shard is missing from it. What’s more, three suns are about to advance into conjunction, and the shard has to be benefit in space.

The Mystics have cared for one of the last Gelflings, an orphan named Jen. As the conjunction approaches, they send him out to come by the lost shard. Along the contrivance, Jen finds unusual friends who succor him in his quest, including another Gelfling. But can they avoid the Skekses? And what will happen when the suns line up, and the crystal is completed?

These movies were created in whole by Jim Henson, and even in the darker moments, they have his unmistakeable effect. More modern — and quite different in tone — is “Mirrormask,” which instead has the brand of writer Neil Gaiman, and seems like a warped “Alice in Wonderland.” But Henson’s production company does a huge job with all the queer special effects.

In “Mirrormask,” we’re introduced to Helena (Stephanie Leonidas), a young circus girl who longs for a “normal” life, and makes interpret, otherworldly drawings. But one night her mother collapses, and needs life-saving surgery. The guilt-ridden Helena is suddenly whisked into a world that looks very like her drawings, where everyone has a cloak — and the pretty queen of light (who looks a lot like Helena’s mom) is in a coma.

Helena is obvious to wake the queen, and gets juggler Valentine (Jason Barry) to accompany her on her quest for the mysterious Mirrormask. But the stakes become higher when the forces of darkness — and their eerie queen — target Helena, and she finds that a dismal duplicate of herself has taken over her life. Now Helena must somehow defeat the unlit forces, with her mother’s life — and her fill — hanging in the balance.

All three of these movies are classics of one type or another, and each embraces a different kind of fantasy. One is about wanting to be swept into an idyllic fantasy life. One is entirely of another world. And one is about the dangers of the other world.

To top it off, three are coming-of-age stories, whether for a teenage girl or a Muppet Gelfling — they all focus on someone pursuing something that can assign what is notable to them, and growing as a person along the procedure. The scripting tends to be tight and a puny wry. Sometimes it gets goofy, but well-acted (and in Bowie’s case, well-sung) .

What’s more, the styles of each movie change: “Unlit Crystal” is very fantastical and serious, even with some injurious, dim parts, while “Labyrinth” is more kiddy-friendly and Muppety, with the dinky chivalrous fox (though Bowie’s tight pants are a Vast distraction) . And “Mirrormask” has a different style altogether, with lots of gloomy buildings, eerie lighting, burly masks, wide bodies and tentacle-like limbs.

The “Jim Henson Fantasy Films” are a favorable collection of films, showing off Henson’s more fantastical side. Definitely worth seeing.

The Jim Henson company is following the same format they had done with The Storyteller Collection and are putting their three fantasy movies onto a single three disk collection. The movies are The Gloomy Crystal, Labyrinth, and MirrorMask. Two of these movies (Dusky Crystal and Labyrinth) came from Jim Henson himself while MirrorMask is actually from Neil Gaiman, but produced by the Jim Henson company.

The movies themselves are enormous. The Shadowy Crystal takes you into a whole different world in a blueprint that no other film has even near stop to accomplishing. Labyrinth takes what Black Crystal did a step further and makes a storybook fantasy near to life in an fabulous intention. MirrorMask is fair as splendid as the previous movies, but with more computer generated images than live action animatronics and sets.

What you are getting is essentially the previous releases of these movies tranquil into this one volume, including all of the awesome bonus features. They say this collection has been mastered in high definition, but I don’t know if that means a primary improvement in video quality from the recent release or not. There are no additional features or commentaries on these disks from what you had before. Luckily the novel releases came with some very nice documentaries and those are included here. This DVD state also comes with a booklet that is essentially a teaser for the upcoming Dismal Crystal manga silly.

I am a limited hard pressed to recommend this collection to anybody who already has the movies. It doesn’t offer an additional features that you can’t already accumulate on the separate DVD’s, the whole “remastered” element is debatable, and the one and only thing that would have made this a decent steal (an informative insert booklet) turns out to be unbiased advertising for future merchandise. Personally if you really want a high definition transfer wait until these movies are released on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray (or whatever 1080p format that comes up) . Now that the 25th Anniversary Editions of The Shaded Crystal and Labyrinth are out I really ogle no reason to derive this collection, and considering you can bag all three DVD’s separately (with the same features, mind you) at a lower cost the choice is distinct.
